In a groundbreaking move toward digital self-reliance, the Indian government has selected Bengaluru-based AI start-up Sarvam to develop the country’s first indigenous Large Language Model (LLM). This ambitious initiative is part of the IndiaAI Mission, a strategic program aimed at positioning India as a global leader in cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technologies.

A New Era in Indian AI Innovation

Sarvam’s selection marks a significant step forward in India’s efforts to reduce dependency on foreign AI technologies. The start-up is working on creating three distinct versions of its AI language model:

  • Sarvam-Large: Designed for advanced reasoning and complex problem-solving.
  • Sarvam-Small: Optimized for real-time applications and responsive environments.
  • Sarvam-Edge: A lightweight, compact model tailored for on-device tasks and edge computing scenarios.

This diversified approach ensures the AI models can be applied across a range of use cases, from enterprise-level automation to mobile and embedded systems.

Empowering Indian AI with Massive Computing Power

  • Under the IndiaAI Mission, Sarvam will receive access to 4,000 cutting-edge GPUs for a period of six months.
  • This massive computing capability will enable the company to build a 70-billion-parameter AI model,
  • Making it one of the most powerful language models ever developed in India.

Unlike many open-source AI models, Sarvam’s LLM is not expected to be publicly open-sourced. However, it is specifically being engineered for population-scale deployment. A key highlight of the model is its focus on native language fluency and contextual reasoning in Indian languages, which is crucial for a linguistically diverse nation like India.

Boosting India’s Digital Sovereignty

The development of this indigenous AI model aligns with India’s vision of achieving technological sovereignty, especially in high-impact sectors like education, healthcare, governance, and language accessibility. With the ability to understand and process multiple Indian languages, Sarvam’s LLM is poised to bridge the digital divide and empower millions of users across the country.
