Home » ChatGPT Down Globally: OpenAI Investigates Widespread Outage Affecting Users and Services

Users worldwide are experiencing significant disruptions as OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, along with its image generation tool, Sora, went offline today. The unexpected outage, which began in the early hours of ET/BST. it has left millions unable to access these crucial AI services, impacting both free and paid subscribers. OpenAI has confirmed the issue and is actively investigating the root cause.

The widespread downtime began with reports surfacing on outage tracking sites around 2:45 AM ET  initially affecting users in the UK and Europe. As the day progressed, the problem escalated, with a massive surge in complaints from North America and Australia, indicating a truly global impact.

What’s Affected and How Users Are Impacted

The outage is broad, affecting not only the main ChatGPT application but also its underlying API. While some users report intermittent access or slow performance. Many are encountering error messages such as “A network error occurred,” “Hmm.. something seems to have gone wrong,” or the service simply failing to load.

Interestingly, reports suggest a varied impact across different ChatGPT models:

  • GPT-4o: The recommended model for everyday tasks (text, images, voice) appears to be experiencing significant issues.
  • GPT-4.5: If you’re using this for sensitive communication requiring nuance and empathy, you might be affected.
  • o1 or o3: These models, designed for complex analysis where accuracy trumps speed, are reportedly suffering.
  • 4o-mini and 4o-mini high: Users are finding these models for quick technical assistance (math, coding, data analysis) to be working relatively normally, though some sluggishness has been noted.

The disruption is causing considerable frustration, highlighting the increasing reliance on AI tools for daily workflows, from creative content generation to complex data analysis. Social media platforms are abuzz with users sharing their inability to perform even basic functions without AI, leading to a mix of humorous memes and genuine expressions of helplessness.

OpenAI’s Response and Potential Causes

OpenAI has acknowledged the “partial outage” on its status page, stating, “Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate this issue.” As of the latest update, the company has identified the root cause and is working on implementing a mitigation.

While OpenAI hasn’t provided a specific cause, industry experts and AI models like Google’s Gemini offer potential explanations for such widespread outages:

  • Internal Errors: Software bugs, failed updates, or other technical glitches within OpenAI’s complex systems could be at fault.
  • High Demand/Traffic Overload: A sudden surge in user activity or requests could overwhelm servers, leading to performance degradation or complete shutdowns.
  • Cyberattacks: Though less common, malicious attacks like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) could flood the services with traffic, causing disruption.

This current outage follows similar incidents throughout 2025, underscoring that disruptions remain a recurring challenge for widely adopted AI services.

What’s Next?

Users are advised to regularly check OpenAI’s official status page for real-time updates on the restoration of services. The company is actively working to resolve the problem, and a fix is anticipated in the coming hours. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of AI infrastructure and the critical need for robust stability in these increasingly indispensable tools.
