Home » UNSC to Hold Closed-Door Meeting on India-Pakistan Tensions Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

In response to a formal request from Islamabad, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to hold a closed consultation on Monday, May 5, to address the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan in the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack.

The attack, which occurred on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, claimed the lives of 26 people—many of them tourists—and triggered a sharp diplomatic fallout between the two nuclear-armed nations.

In response, India has initiated a series of punitive measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, cancellation of visas for Pakistani nationals, and a blanket ban on imports from Pakistan.

UNSC Responds to Islamabad’s Request Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The  representative of Greece to the United Nations, currently led by Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, has scheduled the meeting for Monday afternoon. Ambassador Sekeris stated that such consultations could offer “an opportunity for views to be expressed,” potentially aiding in de-escalating the situation.

The UNSC consists of five permanent members with veto power—the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China—and ten rotating non-permanent members, including Pakistan, Greece, South Korea, and Somalia, among others.

India’s Diplomatic Push: Jaishankar Reaches Out to Key Global Leaders

In the days following the attack, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held consultations with several UNSC members, excluding China and Pakistan. During these discussions, he strongly emphasized the need to hold the perpetrators and sponsors of the Pahalgam attack accountable.

UN Appeals for Calm: Calls for Maximum Restraint

Amid growing international concern, the United Nations has urged both India and Pakistan to exercise “maximum restraint” to avoid further escalation. While the UNSC universally condemns terrorism, it is also closely monitoring the potential for regional instability stemming from the current diplomatic crisis.

Ambassador Sekeris noted, “These are two major nations—India significantly larger than Pakistan—so any rising tension here is a matter of global interest.”

Key Takeaways:

  • UNSC to discuss India-Pakistan tensions in a closed-door meeting on May 5.
  • The move follows a request from Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack.
  • India responds with strong diplomatic measures and seeks global accountability for terrorism.
  • UN urges both nations to avoid escalation and maintain regional peace.
