Home » India Braces for Intense Heatwaves and Unseasonal Rainfall from May to July: WMO Forecast

As summer intensifies, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a stark warning: large parts of India are expected to endure severe heatwaves between May and July 2025, with some regions also facing above-average rainfall. This dual threat of scorching temperatures and unseasonal rain could have wide-reaching consequences for public health, agriculture, and infrastructure.

According to the WMO’s latest climate outlook, India’s 2025 summer will be marked by a combination of extreme heat and shifting rainfall patterns, a trend consistent with global climate change impacts. While heavy rain may offer temporary relief from the rising mercury, it also raises concerns about flooding in vulnerable areas.

Heatwaves Expected to Surge Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) echoes the WMO’s forecast, predicting “above-normal heatwave days” across most parts of the country. Urban and rural areas alike could see record-breaking temperatures, heightening the risk for heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

Why are heatwaves happening in India?

  • Heatwaves in India are becoming increasingly intense and frequent, driven by a complex mix of global climate change and localized environmental disruptions.
  • The steady rise in global temperatures is shifting seasonal patterns and pushing the boundaries of normal weather behaviour.
  • The rising heat is rapid urbanization and widespread deforestation
  • Alters natural land surfaces and reduce vegetation cover. These changes inhibit natural cooling and contribute to the creation of urban heat islands.

In northern India, high-pressure atmospheric systems frequently lead to clear skies, reduced wind flow, and minimal rainfall, intensifying heatwave conditions. Compounding the issue is the presence of the Loo, a scorching, dry wind originating from the Thar Desert. This wind sweeps across parts of western and northern India, exacerbating already severe heat conditions.

Another crucial factor is the delay or disruption of Western disturbances—weather systems that typically bring rainfall to northern India during the summer months. When these disturbances are delayed, the cooling relief they offer is absent, allowing heatwaves to persist for longer periods.

Urgent Need for Effective Heat Action Plans

Experts emphasize the urgent need for robust heat action plans (HAPs) to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures. Although several Indian states and municipalities have introduced HAPs in recent years, implementation gaps and lack of community awareness remain significant challenges.

“Preparedness is key,” says climate policy analyst Ritu Sharma. “Without strong coordination between local governments, health departments, and communities, these plans will fall short during critical heatwave periods.”

What Residents Can Do to Stay Safe

As the India summer forecast for 2025 becomes increasingly clear, residents are advised to:

  • Stay updated with local weather alerts.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
  • Stay hydrated and wear loose, light-coloured clothing.
  • Check on elderly neighbours and those with chronic health conditions.
  • Ensure proper ventilation and cooling mechanisms at home.

Conclusion: A Season of Extremes Ahead

With India’s summer 2025 poised to deliver both blistering heat and unexpected downpours, proactive preparation is more important than ever. Both governments and citizens must take timely action to reduce the human and economic toll of extreme weather.

Stay informed, stay cool, and stay safe.
