Home » RCB’s IPL Title Victory Celebration Turns Tragic: 11 Dead, over 30 Injured in Bengaluru Stampede

What should have been a night of joy and celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans turned into a tragic event on Wednesday, as a massive crowd outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium led to a deadly stampede. The incident claimed 11 lives and left over 30 injured, casting a dark shadow over RCB’s historic first IPL title win.

Overwhelming Crowd Causes Chaos

According to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the stadium’s capacity is 35,000, but an estimated 2 to 3 lakh people gathered near the venue. He stated, “The match was held on Tuesday, and the celebration was organized on Wednesday. No one anticipated such a massive turnout.”

The event, hosted by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), was meant to celebrate RCB’s victory. However, poor crowd management, limited infrastructure, and miscommunication led to uncontrollable scenes.

How the Stampede Unfolded

Preliminary investigations suggest that the stampede occurred due to small and narrow gates, unable to handle the surging crowd. CM Siddaramaiah explained, “People forced their way in and even broke some gates, causing a stampede. It appears to be due to poor coordination, but an inquiry will reveal the full truth.”

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar added, “It was a crowd beyond what anyone expected. The situation was absolutely uncontrollable.”

Reports from police and eyewitnesses describe a situation where fans began pushing through barriers, climbing gates, and scaling walls. At one point, around 1.5 lakh people were gathered at the gates, creating panic and triggering the deadly crush.

Timeline of the Tragedy

  • Tuesday Night: RCB wins their first-ever IPL title.
  • Wednesday Morning: Conflicting updates emerge about the victory parade.
  • 3:14 PM: RCB confirms a 5 PM parade and limited free passes online.
  • 3:30 PM: Authorities close stadium gates due to growing crowd pressure.
  • Evening: Stampede occurs near broken gates amid chaotic scenes.
  • Later that night: 11 confirmed dead, over 30 injured.

Police Response and Crowd Control Efforts

Despite deploying additional personnel, police admitted they were overwhelmed. Authorities reported that nearly 50,000 people gathered within a 1-kilometer radius of the stadium. With rising pressure and increasing fan aggression, police were forced to conduct a lathi charge to disperse the crowd in certain areas.

By 3:30 PM, the stadium gates were closed to prevent further chaos. However, tensions escalated as thousands outside were unable to gain entry, many of whom had gathered based on unclear information.

A key factor behind the incident was conflicting information regarding the celebration plans. Early on Wednesday, Bengaluru Traffic Police announced there would be no victory parade, only a stadium event.

However, at 3:14 PM, RCB’s official social media page contradicted that statement, announcing a parade at 5 PM followed by stadium celebrations. They also stated that free passes would be made available online in limited numbers.

Government Orders Full Inquiry

The Karnataka government has announced a comprehensive investigation into the RCB stampede incident. Authorities will review the role of the cricket association, law enforcement, and event organizers.

Conclusion

RCB IPL 2025 victory celebration turned into a heart-breaking event due to mismanagement, misinformation, and a massive turnout. As the city mourns the loss of innocent lives, this tragedy serves as a crucial reminder of the need for better crowd control, transparent communication, and organized planning during large-scale public events.
