Home » NEET PG 2025 Postponed: Supreme Court Orders Single-Shift Exam, NatBoard to Announce New Date Soon

In a major update for medical aspirants, the NEET PG exam 2025 has been officially postponed by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The decision follows a Supreme Court directive mandating the exam be conducted in a single shift. To ensure fairness, transparency, and security in the evaluation process.

NEET PG 2025: Why Was the Exam Postponed?

The NEET PG 2025, which was originally scheduled for June 15, has been deferred to a later date. According to the latest notification from NBEMS, the postponement is necessary to facilitate logistical changes. That includes the expansion of test centers and upgrades in exam infrastructure.

“NBEMS will conduct NEET-PG 2025 in a single shift. The exam, scheduled for 15.06.2025, has been postponed to arrange for more Test Centers and required infrastructure. The revised date shall be notified shortly,” the official NBEMS notice reads.

This move is in compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Writ Petition No. 456/2025 (Aditi & Ors vs National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences & Ors), where the court emphasized that conducting the NBE NEET exam in two shifts creates an unfair playing field due to discrepancies in question difficulty.

Supreme Court Criticizes Two-Shift Exam Format

A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and NK Anjaria observed that the two-shift format led to “arbitrariness”. It could compromise the integrity of the examination. The bench highlighted that exam papers across multiple shifts can never be identical in difficulty level, which can affect the fairness of the selection process.

“Holding the exam in two shifts leads to arbitrariness. The examining body ought to have considered making arrangements for holding the examination in one shift,” the bench stated.

NatBoard Faces Logistical Challenge

While the NBE initially proposed holding the exam in two shifts due to limited infrastructure. It admitted that organizing a single-shift NEET PG would require nearly 900 additional test centers. However, the Supreme Court rejected this justification, stating that with current technological advancements, adequate arrangements can and should be made across the country.

“We are not ready to accept that the examining body could not find enough centers to hold the examination in one shift,” said the Supreme court.
