India’s Fight Against Anemia: Progress, Challenges & the Road Ahead

🔍 Why Is This in the News?

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently released an update on the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) campaign, showcasing India’s consistent efforts to eliminate anemia, a major public health concern affecting millions—especially women and children.

🛡️ What is the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) Campaign?

Launched in 2018, the Anemia Mukt Bharat initiative is a flagship program under the National Health Mission (NHM). It follows a strategic 6x6x6 model aimed at reducing anemia across vulnerable populations through a multi-pronged, institutional approach.

💡 The 6x6x6 Strategy Explained:

Six Target Groups:

    • Children (6–59 months)
    • Adolescents (10–19 years)
    • Women of reproductive age (15–49 years)
    • Pregnant women
    • Lactating mothers
    • Men

Six Key Interventions:

  1. Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation – Tailored IFA dosages for children, teens, and women.
  2. Biannual Deworming – For ages 1–19 and antenatal deworming for expectant mothers.
  3. Behavior Change Communication – Campaigns promoting nutrition-rich diets and awareness.
  4. Anemia Testing & Treatment – Digital screening tools and improved diagnostics.
  5. Food Fortification – Mandatory addition of iron and folic acid in public food distribution programs.
  6. Addressing Non-Nutritional Causes – Tackling anemia due to malaria, hemoglobinopathies, and fluorosis.

Six Institutional Mechanisms:

Including state health departments, schools, Anganwadi centers, and grassroots health workers (ASHAs, ANMs)

🧬 Understanding Anemia: Causes, Symptoms & Impact

Anemia is primarily caused by iron deficiency, leading to reduced hemoglobin levels. This impairs oxygen delivery in the body, resulting in:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Diminished cognitive and physical function

📊 Global & Indian Context:

  • WHO Definition:
    • Hemoglobin <12 g/dL in women (15–49 years)
    • Hemoglobin <11 g/dL in children under 5
  • NFHS-5 Data:
    • 1% of children under 5 are anemic
    • 1% of adolescent girls suffer from anemia

👩👧👦 Who Is Most at Risk?

  • Children under 5
  • Adolescent girls
  • Menstruating women
  • Pregnant and lactating mothers

️ Consequences:

  • Impaired brain development in children
  • Reduced work capacity in adults
  • Pregnancy complications like low birth weight, premature birth, and perinatal death

🌐 Global Efforts: WHO’s Role in Anemia Reduction

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers anemia a core focus within its Global Nutrition Targets (2025) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (2030).

Key WHO Nutrition Targets:

  • 50% reduction in anemia among women of reproductive age
  • 40% reduction in childhood stunting
  • 30% reduction in low birth weight
  • <5% childhood wasting
  • Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates
  • Prevention of childhood obesity

At the 2021 Nutrition for Growth Summit, WHO and UNICEF committed to building global alliances like the Anaemia Action Alliance to fight anemia holistically.

India’s Major Initiatives to Combat Anemia

India is implementing several synergistic programs alongside AMB, including:

  • Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) – Ensuring safe pregnancies
  • Mission Utkarsh – Targeted interventions in high-burden districts
  • National Health Mission (NHM) – Integrative healthcare systems
  • Mother and Child Tracking System (MCTS) – Real-time anemia case monitoring
  • Health Management Information System (HMIS) – National health data analysis
  • District Blood Banks – Enhanced infrastructure for treating severe anemia

Conclusion: A Healthier Tomorrow, One Step at a Time

India’s fight against anemia is more than just a public health mission—it’s a critical investment in human capital and intergenerational well-being. Through evidence-based strategies like Anemia Mukt Bharat, and by targeting the most vulnerable populations, India is making measurable progress toward a malnutrition-free nation.

As India continues its journey toward universal health coverage, combating anemia will remain a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development, gender equity, and a healthier future for all.
