Home » PM Modi Arrives in Canada for G7 Summit; First Visit in a Decade Highlights Global Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Kananaskis, Canada, on Tuesday to participate in the G7 Summit 2025, marking his first visit to Canada in ten years. His arrival underscores India’s growing engagement with global economic and strategic platforms.

The summit, held on June 16–17, is expected to center on major global challenges, including energy security, technological innovation, and the emerging AI-energy and quantum technologies nexus.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi will engage in high-level discussions with G7 leaders, representatives from outreach countries, and heads of international organizations. The focus will be on strengthening international cooperation across critical sectors.

Sixth Consecutive G7 Participation

This year’s G7 meeting marks PM Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in the summit. He arrived in Canada from Cyprus as part of a three-nation tour, following an invitation from newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Bilateral Talks on the Sidelines of the G7

In addition to multilateral engagements, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders. These discussions come shortly after India’s Operation Sindoor, a counter-terror operation targeting militant infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attacks.

India-Canada Relations: A Chance for Reset

The visit also carries significant diplomatic weight. Prime Minister Carney’s invitation signals Ottawa’s intention to rebuild ties with New Delhi, which were strained following controversial allegations by the previous Canadian administration regarding the death of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Highlighting the democratic values shared by both nations, the External Affairs Ministry recently emphasized the upcoming Modi-Carney meeting as a vital opportunity to “exchange views and explore pathways to reset and strengthen India-Canada relations.”
