Home » Mumbai Local Train Tragedy: 4 Dead, 9 Injured in Horrific Commuter Accident

A tragic incident involving two Mumbai local trains has resulted in the deaths of four commuters and injuries to nine others. The accident, which occurred during peak morning rush hour, has reignited concerns about railway safety and infrastructure in India’s bustling financial capital.

The devastating event unfolded around 9:30 a.m. between Mumbra and Diwa railway stations. According to Swapnil Nila, Central Railway Public Relations Officer, the bags of passengers riding on the footboards of two trains, traveling in opposite directions, brushed against each other. This contact led to multiple individuals falling from the moving trains.

Railway authorities were immediately alerted by the guard of one of the affected trains. The Thane Municipal Corporation confirmed that 13 passengers fell in total.

Victims Identified, Calls for Accountability

The four deceased have been identified as Ketan Dilip Saroj (23), Rahul Santosh Gupta, Mayur Shah (50), and Vicky Babasaheb Mukhedal (34), a police officer.

Nine injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, Thane district. Worryingly, two passengers, Shiva Gawali (23) and Anil More (40), are in critical condition and have been transferred to a higher medical facility for specialized care.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the incident as “unfortunate,” confirming that the Railway Department has launched a full investigation into the exact cause. He also stated that the injured are receiving treatment at both Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital.

Long-Standing Safety Concerns and Negligence Allegations

The Mumbai Railway Passengers Association (MRPA) has strongly condemned the accident, demanding immediate action against the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). The association revealed they had previously lodged two formal complaints with the Railway Board, highlighting the inherent risks posed by the Diva-Kalwa route to commuter safety.

“Many passengers have lost their lives on this route in the past,” stated Madhu Kotian, President of the MRPA. He further criticized the prioritization of mail and express trains over local services. It happened epecially after the addition of two new routes between Kalyan and Thane, which were expected to alleviate overcrowding.

Kotian emphatically stated, “The DRM should take responsibility for this accident. The Railway Board should cease interfering in Mumbai local railway management, and establish an independent Mumbai local administration. Four routes should be exclusively reserved for local trains between Kalyan and Kurla, with mail and express trains prohibited during rush hours.”

Future of Mumbai Local Trains: New Designs and AC Trains in Focus

In the wake of the tragedy, the Railway Board announced plans to introduce new-design, non-air-conditioned trains by January 2026. It promises improved comfort and safety. Additionally, 238 AC trainsets are reportedly under manufacturing for the Mumbai suburban service.

Railway officials detailed three key design changes for the new non-AC trains aimed at enhancing ventilation:

  • Louvres on doors to allow air and light circulation.
  • Roof-mounted ventilation units to pump in fresh air.
  • Vestibules connecting coaches,
  • enabling passengers to move and
  • distribute the crowd more naturally.
